Impressive Buddha Statue in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta Recognized Globally

by Denise

A 20-meter-tall Maitreya Buddha statue in the Mekong Delta has been named one of the most impressive giant Buddha statues in the world by British travel magazine Wanderlust.

The 250-ton statue is one of the most striking features of Vinh Trang Pagoda on Nguyen Trung Tran Street, My Tho City, Tien Giang Province. Made of reinforced concrete, the statue was inaugurated in 2010 and is a symbol of happiness and prosperity in Buddhist teachings.

Vinh Trang Pagoda is one of the oldest temples in southern Vietnam, dating back to the mid-19th century. The pagoda’s architectural design combines elements of French, Roman, Khmer, Chinese and Vietnamese styles.

In 1984, it was recognized as a national historic site by Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Other famous Buddha statues on Wanderlust’s list are located in Bhutan, mainland China, Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand.
