Tamil landowners yesterday protested against an illegally constructed Buddhist temple in Thaiyiddy, Jaffna, amid a heavy crackdown by Sri Lankan police.
The Tissa Rajamaha vihara was illegally built on land seized from local Tamil residents as part of the Sinhalaisation process in the Northeast.
Despite being under surveillance by the Sri Lankan police and army, landowners have protested against the illegal temple every full moon day since 2023.
Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists. Tamil journalists are particularly at risk, with at least 41 media workers reportedly killed by the Sri Lankan government or its paramilitary forces during and after the armed conflict.
Despite the risks, our teams on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting on developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as expert analysis and insights from the Tamil perspective
